ENTRY LEVEL STAFF ENGINEER POSITION:

Staff Engineers for Wertz Geotechnical Engineering, Inc. (WGE) are directly involved with geotechnical subsurface assessments, construction quality assurance and monitoring projects, and geotechnical engineering activities. Engineers at WGE are professionals tasked with coordinating the collection of and reviewing samples and data from the field, reviewing construction documents, communicating with clients, and creating recommendations and client deliverables to provide our clients with valuable information related to geotechnical aspects of construction and civil site design.

Your primary responsibility will be completing field activities and assisting with producing figures and client deliverables, including tasks such as preparing figures, letters, and geotechnical engineering reports; preparing models and performing calculations; assisting with and leading field sampling and logging activities for soil; monitoring and logging bedrock coring activities; completing test pits and dynamic cone penetrometer tests; monitoring excavations and testing soil compaction during earthwork construction activities; assisting with geotechnical laboratory work (including particle-size analyses, standard and modified proctors, Atterberg limits testing, and concrete compressive strength tests); and assisting as needed with drilling coordination activities and other construction materials testing activities depending on current project needs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
• Support projects by providing field support, data management and interpretation, technical assistance, and reporting;
• Be detail oriented in your role and assure all needed data is collected during field activities;
• Perform test pits, wildcat dynamic cone penetrometer tests, check foundation-bearing subgrades, and prepare letters for review by the project engineer/manager;
• Prepare models and perform geotechnical engineering calculations and design as needed under the direct supervision of the project engineer;
• Collect project information and prepare engineering figures, drawings, reports, and other deliverables for review by the project engineer;
• Ability to effectively read and interpret construction drawings and documents, comprehend and interpret local building codes, as well as to inspect and review projects to monitor compliance with building codes, safety codes and other regulations;
• Ability to develop relationships, establish communication with clients, and work independently;
• Assist with geotechnical sampling activities under direction of project engineers and managers;
• Ability to accurately collect data and prepare logs for activities such as sampling soils and rock cores, drilling activities, and groundwater levels;
• Accurately monitor and document construction activities, perform sampling and testing of construction materials, and assist with other activities under the direction of the QA/QC manager and the client as needed;
• Other duties/responsibilities not listed above as determined by the current project needs.

Requirements:
• ABET-Accredited B.S. in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnics, Construction Engineering Technology, or a directly related field;
• E.I. / E.I.T. registration in the state of Ohio, or the ability to obtain after hire. For construction engineering technology applicants, a willingness to study under a PE and work towards professional registration;
• 0-3 years’ professional experience (entry-level position);
• Travel is required (50% field work; mostly local). A reliable method of transportation is required (mileage reimbursement provided);
• Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to drive a pickup truck;
• Ability to twist and turn, lift and carry heavy objects, walk long distances, and perform repetitive strenuous activities in the rain, snow, and in both hot and cold weather conditions;
• Nuclear Density Operator Certification (a plus);
• OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Training (a plus);
• ACI Level I Concrete (a plus);
• Working AutoCAD/GIS experience (AutoCAD or NanoCAD a plus);
• Ability to follow all safety regulations set forth by OSHA and the company policy;
• Strong written and verbal communication, technical writing, and organizational skills;
• A working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TESTING TECHNICIAN POSITION:

Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technicians for Wertz Geotechnical Engineering, Inc. (WGE) are directly involved with construction quality assurance, monitoring, and testing projects.  CMT Technicians at WGE are professionals tasked with monitoring and assuring the quality of the construction activities of our clients and their subcontractors, as well as performing special inspections and performing tests and measurements on various types of materials.

Your primary responsibility will be completing field activities, including tasks such as monitoring excavations and testing soil compaction during earthwork construction activities; sampling and monitoring the placement of concrete and reinforcing steel; performing various types of special inspections and field activities such as geotechnical drilling and concrete/asphalt coring; and assisting with geotechnical laboratory work (including concrete compressive strength tests, particle-size analyses, standard and modified proctors, Atterberg limits testing).
You will also assist with reporting activities as needed, including preparing daily field reports for CMT and monitoring activities under the supervision of the QA/QC manager.

•     Accurately monitor and document construction activities, perform sampling and testing of construction materials, and assist with other activities  under the direction of the QA/QC manager and the client as needed;

Requirements:

•     Associates degree or some education in Construction Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering or Construction, or applicable previous construction experience (a plus);
•     Travel is required (90% field work; mostly local). A reliable method of transportation is required (mileage reimbursement provided);
•     Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to drive a pickup truck;
•     Ability to twist and turn, lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), walk long distances, and perform repetitive strenuous activities in the rain, snow, and in both hot and cold weather conditions;
•     Nuclear Density Operator Certification (a plus);
•     OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Training (a plus);
•     ACI Level I Concrete (a plus);

GEOTECHNICAL DRILL RIG MECHANIC:

Geotechnical Drilling Rig Mechanics for Wertz Geotechnical Engineering, Inc. (WGE) are directly involved with geotechnical subsurface assessment activities. Drillers at WGE are professionals tasked with operating heavy equipment (namely geotechnical drilling rigs) and performing the collection of samples and data from the field to assist in providing our clients with valuable information related to geotechnical aspects of construction and civil site design.

Your primary responsibility will be to provide ongoing maintenance, repairs, diagnostics/troubleshooting, upkeep, and care of the company’s geotechnical drilling rigs, vehicles, and equipment.

Duties/Responsibilities:

•     Perform and lead geotechnical drilling and sampling activities under direction of project engineers and managers and in communication with staff geologists and engineers as necessary;
•     Performing site reconnaissance as requested and providing input to drilling coordination personnel regarding accessibility, safety, feasibility, and equipment concerns;
•    Assist with repair and maintenance activities in the shop under supervision of mechanics/drilling supervisors as applicable;
•    Contact and develop relationships with drilling equipment, supply, and parts vendors to source drilling supplies, parts for repair and maintenance, and equipment such as augers and field sampling equipment as needed and approved;
•    Communicate with clients (environmental scientists, engineers, and geologists) to determine equipment and supply needs for contract drilling work;
•    Performing site reconnaissance as requested and providing input to drilling coordination personnel regarding accessibility, safety, feasibility, and equipment need concerns;
•    Safely operate, mobilize, set up, and take down all-terrain drilling rigs through potentially wet, slippery, and uneven areas as is feasible;
•    Using hollow stem augers or direct push samplers and casings to advance soil borings at provided test locations to the desired depths;
•    Set up the rig for and perform NX/NQ rock core sampling, perform SPT sampling, Shelby tube sampling, and direct push macro-core sampling, and perform specialized downhole testing (such as downhole vane shear testing) as required for the project;
•    Drill in heaving sand and other challenging soil formations;
•    Install monitoring wells/piezometers and inclinometers under the direction of clients, engineers, environmental scientists, and/or geologists;
•     Ability to accurately collect data as outlined on provided drilling instructions sheets, to prepare logs for activities such as sampling soils and rock cores, and to record groundwater encounter depths and levels;
•    Assure the cleanliness and organization of the drilling shop;
•     Other duties/responsibilities not listed above as determined by the current project needs;

Requirements:

•     0-4 years’ professional experience in geotechnical drilling in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, including experience with safely operating, mobilizing, setting up, and taking down all-terrain drilling rigs through wet, slippery, and uneven areas, using hollow stem augers, setting up the rig for and performing NX rock core sampling, performing SPT sampling, Shelby tube sampling, and direct push macro-core sampling as necessary, drilling in heaving sands, and installing monitoring wells/piezometers and inclinometers;
•     Significant professional experience in geotechnical drill rig or other heavy equipment maintenance, repair, upkeep and care. Experience with large CME  drilling rigs and geo-probes, performing in-depth diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and working with hydraulic systems on heavy equipment, and working with drilling equipment/parts companies and vendors to source parts and equipment needed for maintenance and repairs (highly desirable);
•     Travel is required (90-100% field work; mostly local). A reliable method of transportation is required (mileage reimbursement provided), although a  company vehicle may be provided depending on the project needs;
•     Valid driver's license, clean driving record and a reliable source of transportation to and from work and job sites as needed (mileage reimbursement  provided);
•     Valid Class A CDL drivers license and ability to safely maneuver/tow large trailers to mobilize heavy equipment on and offsite;
•     Ability to twist and turn, lift and carry heavy objects, walk long distances, and perform repetitive strenuous activities in the rain, snow, and in both hot    and cold weather conditions.
•     ODOT project experience (a plus);
•     Environmental-related project experience (a plus);
•     OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER (a plus);
•     ODOT or NDA certifications/courses (a plus);
•     Ability to follow all safety regulations set forth by OSHA and the company policy;
•     Strong written/verbal communication and organizational skills.
